A Saturday at Work: Merit Day at the University of Kentucky

Hello, dear readers! Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my work life, and guess what? It’s a Saturday! But not just any Saturday - it’s the first Merit Day of 2024 at the University of Kentucky, and I’m right here, soaking in the energy and excitement.

As the Marketing and Production Coordinator for Information Technology Services, my role often bridges gaps - between technology and people, between what is and what could be. Today, it’s about bridging the gap for new and prospective students (and their parents!) by introducing them to the IT resources available here at the University.

The Heart of Merit Day

Merit Day is not just an event; it’s a celebration, a welcoming, a grand hello to faces fresh and eager. In the midst of banners, booths, and the bustling crowd, our table stands - a beacon for all things IT. Our goal? To ensure that every student stepping into this new chapter feels supported, informed, and ready to embrace their academic journey.

It’s about making that transition smoother, softer, a little less daunting. Whether it’s about accessing the campus Wi-Fi, navigating online resources, or simply knowing who to call when their computer decides to take an unexpected nap - we’re here to tell them, “We’ve got you covered!”

The Joy in the Job

There’s something incredibly fulfilling about today. Sure, it’s work. Yes, it’s a weekend. But the smiles, the conversations, and the shared excitement make every moment worth it. Each query we answer, each piece of information we share, adds a layer of confidence to these bright minds about to embark on their university adventure.

More Than Just Information

Today is about connections - not just internet connections, but human ones. It’s about reassuring parents that yes, their kids will be alright, and showing students that yes, there’s a whole team here to support them. As I chat, laugh, and sometimes empathize with these families, I’m reminded of the power of being present, being human, and simply being there for someone else.

Reflections on a Saturday Well Spent

As the day winds down, and the crowds thin out, there’s a sense of accomplishment in the air. We’ve not just distributed flyers and answered questions; we’ve laid down the welcome mat for the future of this university. And as I pack up the table, there’s a warmth in my heart knowing that in some small way, I’ve contributed to making these students' transition to university life a little easier.

So, here’s to Merit Day 1, to the unsung heroes behind the scenes, and to the beautiful, bustling, sometimes chaotic journey of making a difference. It’s days like these that remind me why I love what I do.

Until next time,

Jessica
